Working Paper No 2 | 2024
Social discriminations and inequalities have deep roots in Greece, constituting a reality that affects many sectors of the country, both in contemporary times and historically. Discrimination is defined as any unjustified segregation of individuals, arising from personal biological or acquired characteristics, while social inequality refers to the unequal distribution of resources among individuals as well as their unequal access to fundamental rights due to various characteristics. Education is one of the most significant goods in human life, and access to it should be free and equal for all individuals. In present Greece, many of these rights that should be considered given are unfortunately not, and regrettably, the right to education is one of them. In this working paper, we are called upon to examine this adverse situation plaguing Greece, which concerns the unequal access to fundamental rights, such as the right to education for young people, due to their socio-economic status, race, religion, gender, or due to some form of disability.
